My Stance on Fanfiction
Hi,
You might have some questions. Here are some answers!
What is Fanfiction?
Fanfiction are fictional stories written by fans based on an existing work of fiction. Fanfiction is typically written written without the authorization of the original creators, but without the intention of monetary gain.
Why are you talking about Fanfiction?
I also want to work to remove the stigma around Fanfiction. A lot of people see fanfiction as unoriginal work, that it’s theft or that Fanfiction is just porn.
But’s it’s not theft: Fanfiction writers don’t make a profit off of their fanfics. Most, if not all, fanfics have a disclaimer about how they don’t own the rights to anything featured in the story.
While there is Fanfiction that features sex, there’s not just that. There are Fanfictions that do some amazing character analysis and explores aspects of characters that the original creators didn’t. Besides, there’s Erotic Novels that are published, so to put down a section of literary works for something that famous authors like Anne Rice have published is unfair.
Fanfiction are love letters to creators, showing them that fans care so much for their characters that they want to delve deep into those characters and give them more attention. Fanfic writers are showing creators that these characters, these stories, mean so much to them. Fanfic authors have written novel-length prose to show their appreciation and love for the original product.
Fanfiction is where I found my interest in writing. Fanfiction is part of my roots and it is something that still continues to intrigue me. I cannot in good conscious prevent others from doing something that I enjoy as well.
And while this may come off as slightly egotistical, considering I am still building my writing career, I would like to provide a written permission on the use of my works in any form of transformative media (for example, fanfiction or artworks) as long as there is no monetary gain:
To all Fanfiction writers and other artists, this is an Open Invitation to use my works in your literature, as long as there is no monetary gain. I hope that you will become inspired to write your own story, just as I have.
Where can I read Fanfiction?
